Professional Expectations

Staff at the Ben Herd Academy adopt the professional expectations of The Sele School in terms of staff conduct. The expectations are:

  • Ensure behaviour and appearance at work or whilst representing the school does not reflect negatively on the school in any way that would bring its reputation into disrepute or cause a loss of confidence in its work (Staff are expected to arrive in smart professional wear unless undertaking physical activities e.g. PE lessons). Staff are setting an example to students and our expectations of them (e.g. no denim or trainers).
  • Challenge attitudes which demean or denigrate other people (individuals or groups) and develop awareness of the impact of individual behaviour
  • Act professionally in dealings with colleagues - treat colleagues as individuals and show sensitivity to their needs
  • Express points of view without being aggressive or overbearing
  • Listen to what others say and respect their point of view
  • Learn from any mistakes
  • Try to find solutions and work through disagreements
  • Take responsibility for personal learning and development and support the learning and development of colleagues
  • Act if made aware of or are witness to any improper conduct, including any act of harassment or discrimination

Tattoos are permitted if they carry appropriate messages. They are not extreme or offensive.

It is recognised that there may be circumstances whereby employees of the school or Ben Herd Academy are known to students outside of work. Examples include membership of sports clubs, family connections, or private tutoring. Staff must declare any relationship outside of school that they may have with students.
